A suspenseful ending allowed PVHS to walk away with a 43-41 over Dexter. With the Howlers leading by that score, Dexter took a long 3-pointer with time winding down in the game, got the offensive board and immediately got fouled as time expired. In the process, the player put up the successful shot attempt, and it initially appeared that the game was tied with a foul shot on the way. The officials conversed and determined that the foul occurred at he buzzer, but the ball was still in the players hand when it sounded, disallowing the made basket. The fouled player was unable to covert the first free throw, securing the win for Penobscot Valley.
The Tigers looked strong early, thanks in large part to their crisp ball movement and the sharp shooting of Trevor Richards. Richards had 16 first half points, including four 3-pointers, as his team had an 8-point 2nd quarter lead. Penobscot Valley went on a 6-0 run to end the half, to cut the lead to 2. Reece Carter nailed three 3-pointers in the first to help keep the Howlers in the game.
PVHS came out strong in the 3rd, outscoring Dexter 14-4 in the frame, and taking an 8 point lead. Grant Kidon scored 9 second-half points, as his team never relinquished the lead. Free throws were the story in the fourth, as both teams couldn’t convert as many as they are accustomed to.
Penobscot Valley was led by Kidon’s 14 points, Carter’s 12 points, and Elijah Wood’s 8. They improve to 15-2 and finish undefeated at home for the season. They have their final game at Grenville on Tuesday.
Dexter drops to 12-4 and hosts Central on Tuesday. They were led by Trevor Richards 21 points and Nathan Richards 10.
