The Husson men’s and women’s basketball teams made it a clean sweep Friday and Saturday in North Atlantic Conference games at Newman Gym in Bangor over Northern Vermont opponents Johnson on Friday and Lyndon on Saturday.
In the men’s game Friday, Husson jumped all over Johnson for a 41 point halftime lead and cruised to an easy 105-32 win.
The Eagles shot 51 percent from the floor, as compared to just 20 percent for the Badgers. The nine first half points for Johnson set a school record for Husson for fewest points ever allowed in a half. The 73 point margin of victory was also the biggest for Husson since joining the NCAA.
DJ Bussey led the way for Husson with 13 points. Justin Thompson, Kyanti Blyden, and Dylan Angel all had 12 points a piece. Justin Martin had 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Cole Thomas and Isiah Hart chipped in 10 points a piece. Robert Dubose led the Badgers with 10 points. Johnson dropped to 3-17, 2-8 NAC.
On Saturday, Husson built another big halftime lead of 28 points and went on for a 94-55 win over Northern Vermont-Lyndon on Senior Day.
The Eagles once again shot the ball well, going 54 percent from the floor and holding the Hornets to 27 percent. Husson used a 19-2 run to push a first half lead of 11 to 49-21 at the break. The Eagles largest lead was 42 at 92-50.
Hussons Justin Martin, one of the seniors honored, led the way with 23 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks. Thompson put in 22 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Bruce St Peter had 12 points and 10 rebounds. Bussey added 10 points off the bench. Lyndon didn’t put any players in double figures, but was led by Kyle Cary with nine points. Ricky Shuford and Jahleel Gabriel added seven points a piece. The Eagles are now 13-8, 9-2, while the Hornets drop to 3-19, 1-10. Blyden was also honored as the only other senior on the Husson roster.
In the women’s game Friday, Husson used a huge third quarter to pull away from Johnson for an 85-45 win.
The Eagles jumped out early to a 20-4 lead after one quarter, but the Badgers closed to within 34-23 at halftime by outscoring Husson 19-14 in the second quarter. Husson though would outscore the visitors 32-7 in a decisive third quarter to cruise to the win.
Kenzie Worcester had a huge game for Husson, scoring 32 points, and adding seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Joan Overman added nine points and eight rebounds, while Nichole Tapparo added nine points off the bench. Megan Peach also added eight points, 10 rebounds, six assists, and three steals. Lindsey Leperle had 16 points, five rebounds, four assists, and five steals for Johnson. Mariah Ramos added 12 points and five rebounds off the bench. The Badgers drop to 2-18, 0-10 NAC.
On Saturday, Husson outscored the Lyndon Hornets 20-9 in the fourth quarter to pull away for the 64-44 win to remain unbeaten in conference play.
Husson led 18-6 after one quarter, and held that same 12 point advantage at halftime. The Hornets got within eight in the third quarter, but the Eagles put the game away with a 16-2 run over the first six minutes of the final quarter for their biggest lead of the game at 23 points.
Emma Alley and Vanessa Duarte led the Eagles with 12 points a piece. Peach had 11 points and grabbed 20 rebounds. Worcester and Overman each had nine points. Faith Poirier had 11 points and Alissa Mitchell had 10 to lead the Hornets. Lyndon drops to 11-10, 6-5 NAC. Husson is now 15-6, 11-0.
Both the Husson men’s and women’s teams will battle in non-conference games on Tuesday. The women will host Bates at 5:30 p.m., while the men are at Bowdoin at 7 p.m. In the NAC standings, the Husson men sit one game behind UMaine-Farmington for first place, and the Husson women are in first and 2.5 games better than Maine Maritime. All teams have three conference games remaining in the regular season.
