#11 Providence slips past Maine men’s hockey

The University of Maine men’s ice hockey team lost a tough battle Friday night, falling to #11 Providence 1-0 at Alfond Arena in Orono.

Bryan Lemos received a pass from Ryan Tait and fired a rising shot from just outside the slot that beat Maine goalie Jeremy Swayman at 5:10 of the second for the only scoring on the night. The Black Bears had received 12 big saves from Swayman in the first period to keep the game scoreless, as the sophomore finished with 29 stops on the night. Maine outshot the Friars 13-4 in the third and pulled Swayman late, having a couple close chances but couldn’t come up with the equalizing goal. The Black Bears drop to 10-14-3, 6-8-3 in Hockey East.

Providence goalie Hayden Hawkey made 28 saves to pick up the shutout win. The Friars improve their record to 16-8-5, 9-6-2. Maine was 0-2 on the powerplay, while PC was 0-3. With the loss, the losing streak that Maine has against Providence reaches 15 straight games, and 0-17-1 in past 18 head to head meetings including playoffs. The two teams finish up the two game weekend series Saturday night at 7 pm.
