Blanca Millan scored a game high 31 points, 18 of those in the first half Saturday afternoon as the Maine women’s basketball team kept on rolling with their eighth straight win 67-61 over Albany at SEFCU Arena in Albany, New York.
Maine (19-7, 12-1 America East) started slow but never trailed in the game, eventually taking a 20-12 lead after one quarter. Two free throws in the second quarter by Millan gave the Bears their biggest lead to that point 24-12. Maine led 32-21 at the half.
The Bears twice took a 16 point lead in the third quarter, once on a three pointer by Dor Saar and then again later in the quarter on a free throw from Millan. Maine still led by 11 after three quarters. Albany (11-14, 8-4) got within four twice in the waining minutes on a pair of baskets in the lane by Heather Forster, but Maine pulled away on a three pointer from Saar and fast break layups from Tanesha Sutton and Millan.
Millan added four steals for Maine. Sutton had 12 points, four rebounds, three assists, and four steals. Sutton also recorded her 1,000th career point early in the third quarter. The senior guard becomes the 21st player in Maine women’s basketball history to reach the 1,000 point plateau. Saar also chipped in 11 points. Kyara Frames had 23 points and five rebounds for Albany. Forster finished with 13 points and nine rebounds.
Maine is off until next Sunday when they play Stony Brook at the Augusta Civic Center at 1 pm.
