Winslow holds off Old Town to advance in class B girls tourney

BANGOR- The Winslow Black Raiders went on a 7-0 run to start the second quarter and held on for a 36-29 win over Old Town in a Maine Principals’ Association class B girls basketball quarterfinal played Saturday afternoon at the Cross Insurance Center.

Winslow built the lead to 13-7 late in the first quarter. Old Town scored the final four points of the quarter to cut the deficit to four after the first eight minutes of play. The Black Raiders picked up the defensive pressure and built the halftime lead to 22-14.

After Winslow scored the first basket of the second half, the Coyotes scored the next nine points to get the deficit down to 24-23. Silver Clukey made a three pointer late in the third quarter as the Black Raiders held a 29-25 advantage heading into the final eight minutes.

The Black Raiders struggled from the free throw line throughout the contest, however they stepped up when it mattered most. Clukey and Weslee Littlefield combined to go 4-4 in the final minutes to help secure the victory. Old Town didn’t hold the lead for the full 32 minutes.

Clukey scored a game high 15 points for the Black Raiders. Littlefield added eight points, four rebounds, and three assists.Meaghan Bernard pulled down nine rebounds, while Budhi Littlefield added five rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Winslow (13-6) will play a semifinal game against MDI or MCI on Wednesday evening at 8:35 PM. Winslow shot 8-16 from the free throw line, while Old Town shot 0-3.

Maddy Emerson had 10 points, five rebounds, and two assists. Hannah Richards added nine points and five steals. Old Town finishes the season with a 15-4 record.
