Strong second half propels Deer Isle girls into semifinals

BANGOR, Maine- The Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners outscored the Ashland Hornets 13-2 in the second quarter and 33-13 in the second half Monday morning, to pick up a 57-28 Class D girls win in a Maine Principals’ Association quarterfinal game at the Cross Insurance Center.

Ashland took their final lead in a tightly contested first quarter on a three pointer by Jamie Poulin to make it 13-11 Hornets after the opening eight minutes. Poulin had seven of Ashlands 13 first quarter points. The Mariners then got seven quarter points from Kaylee Morey to outscore the Hornets 13-2 to take a lead they never relinquished 24-15 at halftime.

Taylor Hardy would score 12 third quarter points as Deer Isle-Stonington continued to widen the margin 44-24 at the end of the third. The 29 point win was the largest lead of the day as the Mariners go to 17-0.

Lillian Gray finished with 15 points to lead DI-S. Hardy had 14 points and six rebounds. Poulin finished with 11 points, and Olivia Tardie put in eight as Ashland finished their season with a record of 8-12.

Deer Isle-Stonington will now face Woodland in a 7:05 pm semifinal on Thursday.
