BANGOR– The Penobscot Valley High School (PVHS) Howlers started the game on an 8-0 run and held on for a 45-42 win over Narraguagus in a Maine Principals’ Association Class C girls basketball quarterfinal game played on Tuesday afternoon at the Cross Insurance Center.
The Howlers built the lead as high as 10 (21-11) in the first half and held a 25-16 halftime lead. Lexi Ireland scored 10 of her game high 16 points in the first half.
Narraguagus cut the deficit to six in the third quarter. Lexi (6) and Emilee Ireland (4) combined to scored 10 points to help the Howlers expand the lead to 38-24 heading into the final quarter
The Knights went on a 7-1 run to start the fourth quarter. After a timeout, Emily St. Cyr converted a layup to get the lead back up to double figures. Lexi Ireland fouled out with 4:30 left and the Howlers up by nine (42-33). Narraguagus ended the game on 9-3 run. PVHS was able to hold on thanks to a basket from St. Cyr and a free throw from Laney Harding in the final minutes.
Anna Strout led the Knights with 12 points, eight rebounds, and five steals. Kaci Alley added eight points and eight rebounds. Lanie Perry chipped in with eight points, three steals, and two assists. Narraguagus finishes the season with a record of 18-2.
Lexi Ireland added nine rebounds and four steals to go along with her game high point total. St. Cyr added 10 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Laney Harding chipped in 10 points (3 three pointers in first quarter). PVHS (15-5) will play in a semifinal game on Friday night at 8:35 against Stearns.
