Schenck rebound way to semifinal win over Woodland

BANGOR– Travis Thompson scored 21 points, including going 5-6 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to lift Schenck to a 50-44 win over Woodland in a Maine Principals’ Association Class D boys basketball semifinal game played Thursday afternoon at the Cross Insurance Center.

The teams were separated by four points or less in a first half that ended 28-28. Thompson scored 12 points in the half for the Wolverines, while Drew Hayward had eight for the Dragons.

Schenck held a lead the entire third quarter that was capped by a Thompson basket that made it 35-32. Colby Hannan gave the Wolverines there biggest lead (41-33) with 3:02 remaining in the fourth quarter. Sabre Phelps cut the Dragons deficit to 45-41 with 1:35 remaining. The Wolverines outscored Woodland 5-1 down the stretch with freshman Kaden Hannan getting the biggest basket.

Kaden Hannan scored nine points and grabbed five rebounds for the Wolverines. Tyrone Davis recorded eight points and 10 rebounds. Colby Hannan also put in eight points. Thompson also had five rebounds to go along with his game high 21 points. Schenck (13-7) will take on Jonesport-Beals in the class D regional final on Saturday morning at 10:45. The Royals defeated Greater Houlton Christian Academy in their semifinal game on Thursday.

Schenck out rebounded Woodland 32-26, including 18-8 in the second half. The Dragons shot 13-17 from the foul line, while Schenck shot 10-22.

Hayward scored a team high 17 points for the Dragons. He also had six rebounds and three assists. Phelps added 13 points and eight rebounds. Chris Plissey chipped in with seven points and six rebounds. Woodland finished the season with a 17-2 record.
