Vining and Porter propel Southern Aroostook to semifinal win over Schenck

BANGOR– Kylie Vining (8) and Makaelyn Porter (7) combined for 15 points in the fourth quarter to lift Southern Aroostook to a 49-32 win over Schenck in a Maine Principals’ Association Class D girls basketball semifinal game played Thursday evening.

The Warriors raced out to a 14-3 lead through the first eight minutes. Schenck chipped into the deficit some and outscored Southern Aroostook 8-5 in the second quarter to cut it to 19-11 at the half. The Warriors blossomed their lead though to 24-12 early in the second half. Olivia Gallant then sparked an 11-0 Wolverines run as they cut the deficit to 24-23. Southern Aroostook took control of the game when they went on a 13-0 run that extended into the fourth quarter. The Warriors scored 23 points in the fourth quarter to secure a trip to the regional final. The defending state champs will take on Deer Isle-Stonington in the class D regional final at 9:05 AM.

Southern Aroostook (18-2) out rebounded Schenck 28-18. Gallant led the Wolverines with 15 points. Samantha Falone and Laura Cote added six points each. Schenck finishes the season with a 13-7 record.

Vining led the Warriors with 16 points and six rebounds. Porter added 16 points, four rebounds, and four assists. Kacy Daggett recorded eight points, eight rebounds, and three assists. Sydney Brewer also had eight points.
