Boothbay rallies to defeat PVHS and earn first state title since 1984

BANGOR- The Boothbay Seahawks outscored Penobscot Valley High School (PVHS) 28-12 after the first quarter and held off the Howlers for a 33-25 win in the Maine Principals’ Association Class C girls basketball state championship game played Saturday night at the Cross Insurance Center.

PVHS went on an 11-0 run in the first quarter and held a 13-5 lead after the first eight minutes. Boothbay (22-0) went on a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to 13-9. PVHS maintained that four point lead (15-11) going into halftime.

The Howlers scored the first basket of the third quarter. Boothbay scored the next nine points to take a lead they wouldn’t give back. The Seahawks held a 24-22 lead after the third quarter.

Glory Blethen went 3-4 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to help the Seahawks secure the victory. It is the first state championship for Boothbay since 1984.

Faith Blethen filled up the stat sheet for the Seahawks with nine points, 16 rebounds, six blocks, three steals, and two assists. Chloe Arsenault added eight points, five rebounds, and four steals.

Boothbay (22-0) shot 8-16 from the free throw line, PVHS shot 4-16 from the line. Boothbay outrebounded the Howlers 36-31.

Lexi Ireland led the way for PVHS (17-5) with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Emily St. Cyr added seven points (all in the first quarter) and five rebounds. Leine McKechnie pulled down 10 rebounds for the Howlers.
