Postgame interviews- Brewer, Vining, Mathers, Urquhart
BANGOR– For the second straight year the Southern Aroostook Warriors girls basketball team dominated Class D. Southern Aroostook went on a 19-2 run to end the first quarter, and rolled to a 55-30 win over Greenville in a Maine Principals’ Association Class D state championship game played Saturday afternoon at the Cross Insurance Center.
The Lakers jumped out to a 5-2 lead. After that it was all Southern Aroostook. They went on a big 14-0 run, including Sydney Brewer going 2-2 from the free throw line with 5:30 left in the first quarter to start the run. The first of those free throws was the 1000 career point for the junior. Brewer (6) and Kylie Vining (5) combined for 11 first quarter points as the Warriors held a 19-8 lead after the first eight minutes.
Jessica Pomerleau went 1-2 from the free throw line early in the second quarter to cut the Lakers deficit to 19-9. That would be as close as they would be the rest of the way. Southern Aroostook went on a 7-0 run to get the lead up to 26-9. They held a 29-14 advantage at halftime.
Brewer scored a game high 14 points for the Warriors. She also pulled down seven rebounds. Makaelyn Porter added 13 points and five assists, Kassidy Mathers chipped in with seven points and four rebounds. It is the first time Southern Aroostook (20-2) has won two straight state championships.
Halle Pelletier, Jessica Pomerleau, and Tiegan Murray finished with nine points each for the Lakers. Greenville finishes the season with a 15-7 record.
