The America East recently announced their end of the regular season conference women’s basketball awards. And the Maine Black Bears were well represented.
Blanca Millan was named America East Player of the Year and also Defensive Player of the Year, while also landing on the All Conference First Team for a second straight season. Head coach Amy Vachon was named Coach of the Year to become just the sixth coach in league history to be named that in back to back seasons, leading the Black Bears to back to back regular season America East titles. Tanesha Sutton also joined Millan as a First Team selection. Parise Rossignol was named to the Second Team, while Dor Saar was also named to the AE Third Team. Rossignol and Fanny Wadling were also named All Academic Team selections, making Maine the only school in America East with multiple players getting that honor. Maine begins their run for back to back postseason America East championships when they host UNH in an America East quarterfinal Wednesday night at 7 pm at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor. With three wins in the America East Tournament and a championship, Maine would become the first women’s basketball team at the school to make the NCAA Tournament in back to back seasons since the 1998-99 and 1999-00 teams did so under Joanne Palombo-McCallie.
