With both the North and South Class B regional final games played out last night in high school hockey, state championship Saturday for Class A and B are now set for this weekend at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston.
Familiar faces in Class B return to meet for the state title. Greely dominated Cape Elizabeth 8-4 to capture the South regional title, while Old Town/Orono squeezed past Kennebec (Waterville/Winslow) 1-0 to win the North. The two teams played a rememberable state title game last season, with Old Town/Orono winning 3-2 in overtime.
At Alfond Arena, the Black Bears of Old Town/Orono got a first period goal from Tyler McCannell, and 29 saves in net from goalie Kohle Parker to top the Riverhawks of Kennebec 1-0.
It was the first time in 20 games the team from Waterville/Winslow (15-5) had been held scoreless. Kennebec had chances however with four powerplays in the second period, playing eight minutes of the first 9:26 of the period up a man, but couldn’t capitalize on the opportunities. McCannells game winner was at 9:47 of the first. Ben Grenier made 20 saves in the loss for the Riverhawks.
Old Town/Orono (15-5) and Greely (18-2) will faceoff in the first game of state title Saturday at 1 pm for the B crown. The Class A title game starts at 6 pm when North champ Saint Dominics Academy (15-4-1) faces South regional champion Biddeford (14-6) for the right to be named Class A state champions.
