Theriault may race in NASCAR Cup Series starting this summer

March 25, 2019

25 year old Fort Kent native Austin Theriault may be getting his chance to race on the bigger stage of NASCAR on a part time basis this summer.

It has been two years since Theriault has raced full time, ending with a 2017 championship in the NASCAR Truck Series, winning seven of 20 races. The plan as of now will be trying to qualify with a car owned by Go Fas Racing on July 21 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. That team is owned by Old Orchard Beach native Archie St. Hilaire. St. Hiliare said races in New Hampshire, Michigan, Richmond, and Talladega for Theriault made the most sense as a starting point.

If Theriault is to qualify, he would become the first Maine driver to compete on the biggest stage in NASCAR since Ricky Craven finished 30th at Talladega in October of 2004. This season Theriault is competing part time for Ricky Benton Racing in the NASCAR Truck Series. He finished 22nd on Saturday in the most recent race at Martinsville, Virginia after failing to qualify in the season opening race in Daytona last month.
