The Husson Eagles and UMaine-Farmington Beavers baseball teams opened up North Atlantic Conference play on Friday evening with a split in a doubleheader at the Winkin Complex in Bangor.
In game one, Husson scored 11 second inning runs to break the game open on their way to a 19-5 win. The Eagles actually got outhit in the game 15-13, but the Beavers made five errors. Conor McGuire had two hits and four RBI to lead Husson. Ethan Stoddard had two hits and two RBI, Michael Schneider had a pair of hits and an RBI, while David Leblanc and Nolan Brown each had two RBI as well. Six other Eagles also had one RBI in the win. Ryan Allender (2-1) went 7.0 innings on the hill to pick up the victory allowing three runs, 11 hits, with one walk, and five strikeouts. Justin Rodrique (1-1) took the loss for UMF allowing seven earned runs, six hits, with one walk in 1.1 innings of work. Five different Beavers had one RBI each, as Jake Bessey, Chase Malloy, Derek Bowen, Joshua Xanders, and Troy Johnson all had two hits a piece.
In game two, UMF got a two run triple by Bessey in the fifth inning to pull away from Husson 5-1. The Beavers took a 2-0 lead on a Bessey sacrifice fly RBI in the first, and a Danny Terhune RBI single in the second. Luke Covey got the Eagles right back in it with an RBI single in the fourth. UMF was able to pull away with the three run fifth that included the Bessey two run triple and a Malloy RBI single. Brice Springer (1-1) got the win on the mound allowing just one run, two hits, with one walk, and four strikeouts in the 7.0 inning complete game. Alex Brooks (2-1) took the loss allowing five runs, eight hits, and a walk in 4.0 innings. Covey and Alex Chapman had the only Eagles hits, while Rodrique and Kevin Carter added two hits each for the Beavers. Husson is now 9-9, 1-1 NAC while UMF goes to 4-7, 1-1. The two teams play another doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.
