Maine baseball, softball swept on road in AE games

The University of Maine baseball and softball teams both got swept in their America East doubleheaders on Saturday, with the baseball team dropping two at Stony Brook and softball losing a pair at UMass-Lowell.

At Stony Brook, New York the Seawolves broke out to a 6-0 lead in game one to breeze to an 8-3 win, before holding off the Bears in game two 5-3.

Hernen Sardinas and Danny Casals hit solo homers in the game one loss for Maine, while Nick Silva (1-4) took the pitching loss allowing four earned runs on six hits in 3.0 innings. John Tuccillo and Brandon Janofsky hit solo homers for Stony Brook, as three Seawolves had two RBI each. Greg Marino (2-2) got the win on the hill allowing two runs on four hits in 7.0 innings. Sardinas hit an RBI double, Casals hit his second solo homer of the day, and Jake Roper had an RBI double for the Bears offense in game two. Peter Kemble (1-4) went the distance and took the loss on the mound allowing five runs and eight hits in a 6.0 inning effort. Nick Grande had three hits, including two solo homeruns to lead the Seawolves. Brian Herrmann (3-1) got the win and also going the distance allowing three runs on six hits in 7.0 innings. Stony Brook improves to 13-8, 5-0 America East. Maine is 2-20, 1-3 and will finish off the three game series with Stony Brook at 12 pm Sunday.

 

At Lowell, Massachusetts and River View Field, the host UMass-Lowell Riverhawks pulled away with three fifth inning runs to win the first game 5-2, then used a walkoff homer to top Maine 7-5 in the second game in eight innings.

Amanda Nee hit a solo homer and Alyssa Derrick had an RBI double to lead the Maine offense in game one. Kyleigh O’Donnell (1-4) took the loss in the circle for the Bears allowing two earned runs on five hits in 4.0 innings. Sarah Ratcliffe, Maria Moccio, and Olivia Labbe all hit solo homeruns for UML, and Sara Siteman added a big two run double in the fifth inning. Lovina Capria (7-5) went the distance to get the pitching win allowing two earned runs and five hits in 7.0 innings. In the second game, the visitors from Maine rallied twice from two run deficits (2-0, 5-3) before falling in heartbreaking fashion. Maddie Kimble and Laurine Germain each had two RBI to pace the Bears offense. Germain had extended the game to extra innings with a two run double in the seventh. Emily Reid (2-7) went the entire way and was charged with the loss in the circle allowing seven earned runs and 15 hits in 7.2 innings. Moccio led the Riverhawk offense with three hits and three RBI, including a two out, two run walkoff homerun in the bottom of the eighth. Casey Harding also added two RBI. Capria (8-5) got the win in relief and second win of the day with a perfect 2.0 innings of work with no runs or hits allowed. UML is now 13-12, 2-0 America East. Maine drops to 7-17, 0-2. The two teams play a single game Sunday at 12 pm.
