March 31, 2019

The Maine baseball and softball teams continued their tough start to the America East Conference season on Sunday, as both squads were shutout and were swept in three games on the weekend.

At Stony Brook, Cody Laweryson carried a perfect game on the mound for Maine into the seventh inning, but the Seawolves came up with two runs in the eighth to pick up the 2-0 win.

Chris Hamilton hit a one out single in the bottom of the seventh to end the perfect game and no hit bid for Laweryson. Brad Hipsley had a squeeze bunt to score Brandon Alamo to score the first run in the bottom of the eighth, and Brandon Janofsky added a sacrifice fly RBI to pace the Seawolves. Jake Roper had two hits for Maine, while Danny Casals and Colin Riley added one a piece. Laweryson (0-3) allowed two earned runs, five hits, with one walk, and nine strikeouts in 7.2 innings. Bret Clarke (4-0) picked up the win for Stony Brook allowing no runs, three hits, with four walks, and one strikeout in 8.0 innings. Brandon Bonano picked up his second save of the season allowing one hit in the ninth with two strikeouts. Stony Brook is now 14-8, 6-0 America East. Maine is 2-21, 1-4 and returns home to host UMBC next Saturday at noon for a doubleheader to open up a three game series.

At Lowell, Mass Lovina Capria picked up her third pitching win of the weekend as the Riverhawks also got a three run homer from Casey Harding to cruise to a mercy shortened 8-0 win.

Sara Siteman hit an RBI double in the second inning to make it 1-0 UML, before Harding followed with a three run bomb to open it up to 4-0. The hosts added to the lead when Maria Moccio hit a two run homer, and Melany Sheldon added a two run double in the third to end the scoring. The Riverhawks were able to keep the Bears off the board as the game would end in the fifth due to the mercy rule. Laurine Germain and Kelby Drews had the Maine hits. Harding, Moccio, and Sydney Barker all had two hits for UML. Lilly Volk (4-4) took the loss in the circle for Maine allowing eight runs and eight hits in 2.1 innings. Capria (10-5) went the full 5.0 innings allowing no runs and only two hits. UML is now 14-12, 3-0 America East. Maine is 7-18, 0-3 and will continue on the road with a three game series at UMBC next weekend.
