Red Sox fall to Jays in home opener: pregame celebration highlights day

April 9, 2019

On Tuesday afternoon, the Boston Red Sox received their Championship rings for winning the 2018 World Series.

The World Series MVP’s from 2004 (Manny Ramirez), 2007 (Mike Lowell), 2013 (David Ortiz), and 2018 (Steve Pearce) were all on hand. Many other former Red Sox post season stars including Pedro Martinez and Curt Schilling also were part of the pregame ceremony.

After celebrating the 2018 championship season it was time for the 2019 to play the home opener against the Toronto Blue Jays. Chris Sale (0-3) struggled, giving up five runs in four innings. Sale was frustrated with himself in his postgame press conference after the Red Sox fell 7-5.

Before the struggles of Sale, the Red Sox did hold a 2-0 lead after the second inning. The Blue Jays scored two in the third inning and three more in the fourth inning off Sale.

Mookie Betts hit a solo homer and the Red Sox took advantage of a Blue Jays error to cut the deficit to 5-4 in the sixth inning.

The Red Sox had an opportunity in the ninth inning after Dustin Pedroia singled and Jackie Bradley JR walked. Blue Jays closer Ken Giles retired Blake Swihart, Andrew Benintendi, and Betts to finish the game.

The Red Sox and Blue Jays will end their brief two game series on Thursday night at 7:10 with a Nathan Eovaldi/Aaron Sanchez pitching matchup scheduled.
