Husson baseball splits, softball at home this weekend

After having their doubleheader pushed back one day because of field conditions, the Husson baseball team went to Waterville on Thursday afternoon for a conference doubleheader with the Terriers.

In the first game, Nick Guerrette had two hits and a pair of RBI and Jesse Colford pitched a solid seven innings as the Eagles picked up a 5-2 win.

Husson went up 2-0 when Michael Schneider hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth, followed by a Guerrette RBI single. Nick Bagley got Thomas within a run with an RBI single in the bottom half of the fourth. Ethan Stoddard picked up an RBI on a groundout in the fifth, before Guerrette added an RBI double in the sixth to make it 4-1. Alex Chapman added another Husson run in the ninth on an RBI fielders choice. Colford (4-2) allowed two runs, six hits, walked three, and struckout seven in the 7.0 inning effort. Nolan Dousa picked up his third save.

In the second game, Thomas College used five pitchers and held the Eagles to just three hits to pick up the split with a 2-1 win.

Ryan Kappelmann had three hits of the 10 in the game for the Terriers, including a two run triple in the first that made it 2-0. Connor McGuire had two of the three Husson hits, while Stoddard had the other. The Eagles got on the board in their last at bat when Nolan Brown hit an RBI groundout. Ryan Scepansky started on the mound for Thomas going 3.0 innings allowing no runs or hits. Dean Jackman, Dylan Copeland, Cody Cousins, and Dominic Esposito all pitched an inning for the Terriers, with Jackman (1-2) getting the win and Esposito getting his first save of the year. Blake Slicer (1-1) took the loss for Husson allowing two runs and seven hits over 5.0 innings.

Husson is now 16-12, 6-4 in NAC play. Thomas is 3-15, 1-1. The Eagles are off until Monday when they face Colby in Waterville at 5 pm. Husson is now on a stretch of five non-conference games next week.

Husson softball returns home Saturday to host Thomas at Boucher Field. The Eagles are 11-5 and 2-0 in the NAC. The doubleheader is scheduled for 4 pm and 6 pm. Husson then dips back into non-conference play at home Sunday with a pair against Bowdoin and 12 and 2 pm.
