Bruins jump on Leafs early, even series

April 13, 2019

The Boston Bruins bounced back from a game one loss by jumping on the Toronto Maple Leafs with two first period goals, en route to a 4-1 win in game two of a first round NHL playoff series at TD Garden. The best of seven series is now tied 1-1.

Charlie Coyle got things started receiving a pass from David Backes from behind the net, and beating Leafs goalie Frederik Andersen at 4:44 to make it 1-0. At 16:04, Brad Marchand received a pass from David Pastrnak on a two on one breakout, deking Andersen and beating him five hole to make it 2-0, in what proved to be the game winner.

Danton Heinen got a gift wrapped goal to extend the Bruins lead at 10:39 of the second period. William Nylander lost control of the puck near his own net, and Heinen jumped on it near the left post and tucked it behind Andersen to make it 3-0. Just over halfway through the third, Nazem Kadri cut the Boston lead to a pair when he redirected a point shot behind Bruins goalie Tuuka Rask at 10:44 making it 3-1. Patrice Bergeron put the game away with a powerplay goal at 15:03. This was after a hit on Jake Debrusk who was injured by Kadri with a crosscheck to the head area, in which Kadri was whistled for a five minute major and game misconduct penalty. The Toronto winger may be penalized by the league and face a suspension for the hit. No word yet on the injury to Debrusk who was slow to his feet and left the ice.

Rask made 30 saves in the win. Andersen made 37 stops in the loss. Boston went 1-4 on the powerplay, while Toronto was 0-3. Marchand added an assist for a two point night. The series now changes cities for the next two games, beginning Monday with game three from Toronto at 7 pm.
