BANGOR, Maine- The Husson Eagles and Thomas College Terriers came into Saturday evenings doubleheader at Winkin Complex tied for second place in the North Atlantic Conference. The two teams left the twinbill the same way, as Thomas took the opener and Husson the nightcap to split the pair of games.
In the opener, Thomas got an early run in the first after a Husson error on a Sydney Lebourvea hit scored a runner from second base to make it 1-0 Terriers. A squeeze bunt in the fourth by Kayla Bess scored Lebourvea to make it 2-0. The Terriers then got a two run double from Bailey Dunphy in the fifth doubling the lead to 4-0. Husson responded with a pair of runs in the home half of the fifth when pinch runner Kasey Poligni stole second, and the Thomas catcher Dunphy made a throw to second to try to gun her down allowing Kylie Cunningham to score from third. The Eagles added an unearned run when Bri Brochu singled and advanced to second on the throw, also allowing Poligni to score on the play to cut to to 4-2. That was it for the scoring however as Kelsey Currier earned the pitching win and retired the Eagles in order in the sixth and seventh to secure the win.
Jen Jones (6-4) took the loss for Husson allowing three runs, six hits, with three walks, and six strikeouts in the complete game 7.0 inning effort. Currier (3-3) also went the distance and allowed just one earned run, four hits, with one walk, and four strikeouts. Lauren Guppy and Lebourveau each had two hits for the Terriers, while Olivia Smith had a pair for the Eagles.
In the second game Husson broke the game open with four runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to pick up an 8-1 win. The Eagles took the lead when Morgan Coleman doubled in a run with a shot down the left field line in the second to make it 1-0. The Terriers tied it in the fourth when Kasey Champney responded with an RBI double. Husson then broke it open in the fifth. Whitney Bess and Smith each hit RBI singles, and Jones hit a two run double to put the hosts in control 5-1. Bri Brochu then hit an RBI double in the sixth, followed with another RBI single from Bess, and an RBI fielders choice groundout by Smith to finish off the scoring.
Arika Brochu (6-2) picked up the win in the circle for Husson allowing just one run, six hits, no walks, and three strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Breanna Whitmarsh took the loss for Thomas allowing five runs, 10 hits, with no walks, and three strikeouts in 5.0 innings. B. Brochu and Jen Jones had three hits a piece for the Eagles, while Bess and Smith had two a piece. Husson is now 12-6, 3-1 in NAC play. The Eagles host Bowdoin in a non-conference doubleheader Sunday beginning at noon. The games again will be played at Winkin Complex, as O’Keefe Field is still wet and unable to play on. Thomas sees their record go to 10-8, 3-1.
