The Husson Eagles exploded offensively Thursday afternoon in sweeping a pair of North Atlantic Conference softball games in mercy rule shortened five inning games played at Minaert softball field in Johnson, Vermont over Northern Vermont University-Johnson.
In the opening game the Eagles scored 11 first inning runs and cruised to the shortened five inning victory 16-0. Husson was helped by two errors by the hosts and scored seven unearned runs in cruising to the win.
Brooklyn Scott led the Eagles offensively with two hits and three RBI. Whitney Bess and Katie Windsor each had two hits, while seven others had one hit a piece. Jen Jones (7-5) earned the pitching win going 2.0 innings allowing no runs on one hit with five strikeouts. Alyssa Prest and Louisa Colucci also pitched in relief. Nicole Mooney had two of the three hits for the Badgers, while Emily Marshall (2-8) lost in the circle allowing nine earned runs on 13 hits in 5.0 innings.
In game two it was more of the same as Husson continued their offensive onslaught scoring 17 runs over the last two innings including 14 of those in the fifth inning to finish off the sweep by rolling 27-2.
Kasey Poligni had four hits and a pair of RBI. Prest picked up her first win of the season in the circle for the Eagles, and also did it with her bat as she had three hits and four RBI including a solo homer. Scott continued her big day adding three more hits and three more RBI, finishing with five hits and six RBI in the two wins. Bri Brochu had three hits. Bess, Kylie Cunningham, Tamara Aunchman, and Morgan Coleman all had two hits a piece. Coleman had a two run homer as well. Caitlin Bean and Meagan Gosselin also added hits to the 23 hit attack.
Prest (1-1) allowed one earned run on two hits in 4.0 innings to get the win. Laura Dattillo and Nicole Mooney had the hits for Johnson. Mooney had the lone RBI as the other run came on a passed ball. Marshall (2-9) lost her second game of the day by allowing eight earned runs on eight hits in 1.1 innings. Husson is now 14-8 overall and 5-1 in NAC play, while Johnson is 3-16, 2-3. The Eagles are at Northern Vermont-Lyndon for a doubleheader Friday afternoon.
