The Dexter Tigers baseball team will open their schedule on Monday afternoon when they travel to Bucksport. Like many teams in the area, the Tigers haven’t been able to be on their field due to poor field conditions. The game on Monday was originally scheduled to be played at Dexter.
Dexter coach Chad Graffam said, “As with all the other Coaches we are excited to finally be getting outside and get our season going.”
The Tigers went 13-5 in a 2018 season that ended with an 8-7 semifinal loss at Mattanawcook. The only starters returning from that team are Nathan Richards, Trever Richards, Logan Perkins and Gage Stone. Graffam will hope some young players can step up to fill the roles of the graduating seniors from last season. Brett Kusnierz, Parker Ponte, Ryan Davis, among others will be looked to fill those roles. Defense will be the key to the Tigers competing in a very competitive class C.
“We can’t afford to give teams extra outs and extended at bats,”Graffam said. “Our other challenge will be getting the young guys to fill the offense left by graduation. We won’t make any excuses as other teams are faced with similar challenges.”
The Tigers had their first two games on the schedule last week postponed. They will follow the trip to Bucksport on Monday with road games against Mattanawcook and Penauis this week. The home opener isn’t scheduled until May 1st against Orono.
