Former Black Bear up for top NHL goalie award

The National Hockey League announced that three goalies have been nominated as finalists for the leagues top goaltending award as the best at his position for the 2018-19 season. Former University of Maine and Dallas Stars netminder Ben Bishop is one of the three nominated for the Vezina Trophy for the second time in his career.

Bishop who owned a season record of 27-15-2 had a .934 save percentage, and was also third in the league with seven shutout wins. At one point in the regular season Bishop also had a 233 minute shutout streak. He also had a 1.98 goals against average. Bishop was nominated back in the 2013-14 season when he played for the Tampa Bay Lightning. He won 55 career games in his time with the Maine Black Bears.

The other two finalists are Robin Lehner from the New York Islanders and Andrei Vasilevskiy from Tampa Bay. Bishop is currently trying to lead his Dallas Stars team, coached by another former Black Bear Jim Montgomery, to a first round playoff win over the Nashville Predators in which they lead in the best of seven series 3-2. The winner of the Vezina Trophy will be announced as part of the NHL Awards Show on June 19 in Las Vegas.
