The Husson Eagles softball played the final two games of the non-conference schedule on Tuesday afternoon with a doubleheader at Lafayette Street Field in Lewiston with the Bates Bobcats.
In the first game Husson took a quick 4-0 first inning lead and cruised to an 8-2 win. Jen Jones hit a two run homer and Tamara Aunchman hit a two run single in the four run top of the first. Aunchman increased the lead to 6-0 with a two run double in the fifth for the Eagles. Julia Panepinto got two back for the hosts with a two run single in the bottom of the fifth. Husson finished off the scoring with a Jones RBI groundout in the sixth, and a Chloe Gorey seventh inning RBI single. Aunchman had three hits and four RBI, with Jones adding three knocked in. Whitney Bess and Olivia Smith both added two hits. Jones (8-5) also got the pitching win in the circle allowing two runs, eight hits in 7.0 innings. Payton Buxton (0-8) took the loss in the circle allowing seven runs on 11 hits in 7.0 innings. Caroline Bass and Panepinto had two hits each for the Bobcats.
In the second game the roles were reversed as Bates used the eight run mercy rule to defeat Husson 10-2 in five innings. The Bobcats also used a big first inning in their victory by scoring six runs, highlighted by two run doubles from both Erin Murphy and Emily Samar. Jones got the Eagles on the board with an RBI groundout in the third, followed by a Morgan Coleman RBI single to cut it to 6-2. Aleah Pagan regained the six run lead for Bates with a two run double in the bottom half of the third, followed by a Janell Sato RBI groundout to make it 9-2. The hosts finished off the win when Pagan singled in another run in the home half of the fifth ending the game by mercy rule. Bess and Katie Windsor led Husson with two hits each, and Alyssa Prest (3-2) lost in the circle allowing five runs, four hits in just a third of an inning pitched. Pagan had three RBI for the winners, while Sato, Murphy, and Samar all had two knocked in. Kirsten Pelletier (10-9) got the pitching win allowing two runs, six hits, with five strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Husson is now 17-9, Bates is 13-17. The Eagles are scheduled to host a pair of games with UMPI in Bangor on Wednesday beginning at 3 pm.
