While the Husson baseball team was celebrating their Senior Day with a sweep over UMPI at Winkin Complex, the Eagles softball team did the same on their Senior Day at O’Keefe Field.
In the first game Husson used a four run fifth inning to win by the mercy rule 9-1 in the shortened five innings. Jen Jones and Morgan Coleman had RBI groundouts in the top of the first to make it 2-0 Eagles. The Owls cut it to 2-1 when Sarah Duncklee hit a solo homer in the bottom half. Jones added an RBI double, Coleman a sacrifice fly, and Kylie Cunningham an RBI single in the third to make it 5-1 Husson. Coleman added an RBI double in the fifth, Arika Brochu a two run double, and Whitney Bess an RBI groundout to end the scoring and the game when the Owls couldn’t score in the bottom half.
Cunningham had two hits, Coleman three RBI, and Jones two RBI to lead Husson. A. Brochu (7-2) also got the pitching win allowing one run, three hits, with no walks, and seven strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Brooklyn Garcia (10-7) took the loss for UMPI allowing seven runs, nine hits, with four walks, and two strikeouts in five innings.
In the second game Jones pitched a complete game four hitter with 12 strikeouts, as Husson completed the sweep with a 5-1 win. Bri Brochu broke a scoreless tie in the third when she reached on a throwing error that allowed two unearned runs to score to make it 2-0 Eagles. Chloe Gorey had an RBI groundout in the same inning to make it 3-0. Bess added a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning, that also scored another run on an Owls error to extend the lead to 5-0. Duncklee hit her second solo homer of the day and fourth of the season for the only UMPI run again in the the Owls last at bat in the bottom of the seventh.
Jones didn’t allow any walks in her complete game pitching effort improving to 8-5. A. Brochu had two hits while four other Eagles had one hit a piece. Marissa Reagle (6-2) lost in the circle for UMPI allowing two earned run and six hits over 6.1 innings. Melanee Terry had two hits for the Owls. Husson goes to 19-9, 9-1 in NAC play. UMPI is now 15-13, 7-5. In other action, Thomas College finished their regular season Sunday at 11-1 in conference play. The Eagles can match that 11-1 mark, but Thomas will win the tiebreaker to win the NAC regular season title and host the NAC tournament in Waterville next week. Husson finishes up their regular season Monday at home by hosting UMaine-Farmington for two games beginning at 3:30 pm.
