With the St. Louis Blues beating the San Jose Sharks 5-1 on Tuesday night in game six of the Western Finals, St. Louis advances to their first Stanley Cup Finals in 49 years. Their opponent is the Boston Bruins, whom the Blues faced the last time they were there in 1970.
St. Louis got the job done by defeating San Jose in three straight games, outscoring the Sharks 12-2 in the three victories to clinch the Western Conference title. The Blues have never won a game in the Cup Finals, advancing in their first three years of their existence in 1968, 69, and 70. St. Louis is the oldest franchise to never win it all.
In 1970, the last time the Blues played in a Cup Finals game, Boston legendary defenseman Bobby Orr scored his iconic goal in game four in overtime where he was tripped right after scoring the series clinching goal. St. Louis was swept the previous two seasons in four games by the Montreal Canadiens, putting them at 0-12 all-time in the Finals.
Boston overall is 61-29 with nine ties in the regular season. The Bruins have won seven straight playoff games, but has been off since last Thursday when they clinched over Carolina. Boston will end up with 10 full days off before the Finals begin at TD Garden on May 27. St. Louis is 57-35 with also nine ties in regular season. The two teams met twice in regular season with the Bruins winning 5-2 in Boston, and the Blue winning 2-1 in a shootout in St. Louis. Below is the full Stanley Cup Finals schedule:
