Each week during the high school sports season, Eastern Maine Sports will announce a female and male athlete of the week. You can send your nominations during the week to Marc at easternmainesports@gmail.com. When you send your nominations include the athlete, name of the school, stats for the week of the nomination. Here is a full list of the 293 past athlete of the week winners.
This week, we had six Rowell’s Garage female athlete of the week nominations. Leine McKechnie only allowed five hits in 17 innings pitched and also went 8-9 at the plate to earn her 11th athlete of the week honor. McKechnie has helped the Penobscot Valley high school (PVHS) record 14 wins in 15 games heading into the final week of the regular season. McKechinie joins Kolleen Bouchard (Houlton) as the only student/athletes with at least 10 athlete of the week honors. Bouchard finished with 19.
The Charles Inn female athlete of the week
- Leine McKechnie- PVHS – Softball- pitched a three hitter with 12 strikeouts and allowed only one earned and scored a run in 4-1 loss to Stearns. Pitched a no hitter in 5 inning game with 13 strikeouts and no walks in 30-0 win over Bangor Christian. Went 3-4 at the plate with a triple and two singles and had three RBI.Pitched a two hitter with 13 strikeouts and 2 walks in 5 inning 19-2 win over Searsport. Also went 5-5 at the plate with four doubles and a single with 8 RBI.
Runner up
- Jaida Case- Machias – softball- the 8th grader had three singles, one double, five stolen bases, and four RBI in win over Shead. Had five strikeouts in loss to Narraguagus. Had two strike outs, seven stolen bases, three singles, two double, a 3 run go ahead homer, and five RBI in win over Bangor Christian.
Other nominations
- Olivia Riitano- PCHS- Softball- pitches a three hitter and had two hits in 9-3 win over Penquis. Allowed only two earned runs and struck out seven in 5-1 loss to Foxcroft.
- Makenzie Beaudry- Foxcroft – Softball- pitched a one hitter with 15 strikeouts in 4-0 win over John Bapst. Pitched a two hitter with 11 strikeouts in 5-1 win over PCHS.
- Sydney Ames- Skowhegan- softball – had three hits, including two doubles and pitched a three hitter striking out eight in 10-1 win over Hampden.
- Bre Oakes- Hermon- Softball- pitched a three hitter with 11 strikeouts in 6-2 win over Ellsworth.
