What we know about the high school baseball tournament field

May 30, 2019

The official high school baseball tournament schedule will not be set until Friday night. As make up games will be played on Friday. The following are some of the matchups we do know. The preliminary round games are scheduled for Tuesday, June 4th, while the quarterfinals are set for Thursday, June 6th. Be looking for the full schedule this weekend at easternmainesports.com

In class A, the five time defending champion Bangor missed the tournament with a 4-12 record. Oxford Hills finished as the top seed and will host Skowhegan in a quarterfinal game. Cony will head into the tournament as the four seed and will host Lewiston. Before the Rams.take on the Blue Devils in the quarterfinal contest next week, they will play at Gardiner in a regular season finale on Friday. If Cony wins on Friday, Messalonskee will finish as the sixth seed. If Gardiner wins on Friday, Mt. Ararat would finish sixth and Messalonskee seventh. Number six will travel to third seeded Edward Little, while the seventh seed will travel to number two Hampden.

In class B, many things are still not determined because of the MDI/Ellsworth and Cony/Gardiner games to be played on Friday. Ellsworth will go into tournament play as the number one, Hermon also advances to the quarterfinals as the number two seed. MDI still has an opportunity to move up as high as number three in the standings. Old Town, Medomak Valley, Brewer, Erskine, and Lawrence will also host prelim games.

In class C, Penquis and Dexter needed big wins in the last week to earn a spot. Now those teams are in the class C field. With Calais still to play Machias on Friday, Bucksport and Houlton have to wait and see who finishes sixth. Also Lee Academy could jump from 10th to 8th. It is important because the seventh seed will have to play a prelim game, while the sixth seed advances to the quarterfinals. George Stevens, Fort Kent, Central, and Orono will host quarterfinal games. Mattanawcook finishes as the number five seed and will travel to Orono.

In class D, Central Aroostook, Woodland, Hodgdon, and Jonesport-Beals finished as the top four and will host quarterfinal games. PVHS, Katahdin, Fort Fairfield, and Machias will host prelim games. Schenck, Bangor Christian, Stearns, and Southern Aroostook round out the tournament field.
