Sea Dogs set franchise records, crush Rumble Ponies

The Portland Sea Dogs set two franchise records on Friday night, and Tate Matheny had six RBI as the visitors had their way with the Binghamton Rumble Ponies 20-2 in an Eastern League Double A baseball game at NYSEG Stadium in Binghamton, New York.

Portland (17-34) set franchise records for runs and with hits (26). The Sea Dogs broke open a 1-0 game with seven runs in the fifth. They went on to score one in the sixth, six in the seventh, and five more in the ninth to run away with it. Matheny had a pair of homers in the win, a three run shot in the fifth and a two run homer in the seventh. Bobby Dalbec had a pair of solo homeruns, his ninth and tenth of the year. Deiner Lopez also hit a three run homer and had five RBI, and Keith Curcio added a solo homer for Portland who had six long balls total on the night.

Matheny, Lopez, and Jake Romanski all had four hits each for the winners, while Dalbec, Curcio, Cody Ashe, and Josh Tobias had three a piece. Binghamton (30-19) had six hits on the night, and Patrick Mazeika had an RBI. Tanner Houck (5-4) won on the mound for Portland allowing no runs, three hits, with three walks, along with seven strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Jordan Weems allowed a pair of earned runs in two innings of work, while Durbin Feltman worked a scoreless ninth. Anthony Kay (6-3) went 4.2 innings in the loss for the Rumble Ponies allowing three runs on seven hits. The four relievers out of the bullpen combined to allow 16 earned runs on 19 hits over the final 4.1 innings. The hosts fell a half game behind Trenton for first place in the Eastern Division.

The Sea Dogs and Rumble Ponies continue their four game series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 5:35 p.m.
