Deering High School outfielder Trejyn Fletcher was selected in the second round (58th overall) by the St. Louis Cardinals in the Major League Baseball draft on Monday night.

Fletcher could get a signing bonus of more than $1 million dollars, but had committed to playing college baseball at Vanderbilt. Fletcher will have until August 15 to decide if he wants to start his professional career, or go to college and play for the Commodores.

Fletcher is projected to be an outfielder with alot of power, a good throwing arm, and lots of speed. This past season for Deering he hit .456 with three homers and 24 runs scored. He was also 17 for 17 in stolen base attempts. Fletcher also has a 90 MPH fastball and in four games he pitched he struck out 40 batters in 20 innings, and only allowed seven hits.

Billy Swift, Mark Rogers, and Ryan Flaherty still remain the only players that played high school baseball in Maine that were drafted in the first round of the Major League Baseball draft.
