Former Messalonskee High and Eastern Kentucky standout Nick Mayo made his NBA debut in the Summer League on Monday night.
Mayo played 26 minutes for the Miami Heat and scored 10 points, while also grabbing five rebounds, dishing out five assists, and making two steals. The Heat won the game over the Los Angeles Lakers 106-79.
Mayo was the all time scoring leader at EKU with 2,316 points. That also ranked him fifth all time in the Ohio Valley Conference, and 145th on the all time NCAA list.
Mayo did not get drafted in last weeks NBA draft but will still have an opportunity to make a roster. He will play with Miami this week in the California Classic until Wednesday, then will begin the official Summer League schedule in Las Vegas that runs July 5-15. Mayo is also playing with Tyler Herro, who was drafted 13th last week out of the University of Kentucky. He will battle for playing time on the 12 man roster that also includes other frontcourt hopefuls out of the SEC that include Yante Maten (Georgia), Chris Silva (South Carolina), and Kyle Alexander (Tennessee).
