After playing their worst game of the 2019 season on Friday night in a loss to Baltimore, the Boston Red Sox had six players with at least two hits and used an eight run inning for a 17-6 win over the Orioles at Camden Yards. The teams combined for the 23 runs and also 31 hits in the game.
Christian Vazquez started the scoring with an RBI single in top of the second inning. Jackie Bradley Jr. also hit a three run homer to left center in the frame to make it 4-0. Rafael Devers hit his 20th homerun of the year in the top of the third to extend the lead with the solo shot. Boston starter Rick Porcello wasn’t sharp in this one however, and Baltimore came all the way back to tie it in the bottom of the third. Trey Mancini knocked in the first one with an RBI double. Renato Nunez followed with a three run homer, and then Chris Davis evened it up 5-5 with an RBI single.
The visiting Sox though then exploded in the fourth to put the game away. Mookie Betts hit a two run homer, JD Martinez hit a two run double, Vazquez singled in his second run of the night, and then Bradley Jr. hit his second three run homer of the game to cap off the eight run inning to make it 13-5. The damage was all done after two men were out with just one man on base. Boston (54-45) added three more in the fifth on a Betts RBI single, a Devers RBI triple, and a Xander Bogaerts RBI single. Anthony Santander hit a solo homer for the O’s in the bottom of the fifth, before Sandy Leon also hit a solo homer for the Sox in the ninth to end the scoring.
Porcello (8-7) ends up with the win allowing six runs on 11 hits, with one walk and four strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Heath Hembree, Darwinzon Hernandez, Josh Taylor, and Colten Brewer all pitched a scoreless inning in relief only allowing three hits and striking out a total of six. Bradley Jr. was the offensive leader with the two homers and six RBI. Betts had three hits and three RBI, while Martinez had three hits as well with two RBI. Devers, Bogaerts, and Vazquez also had two hits each. Tom Eschelman (0-2) took the loss for Baltimore allowing nine runs (five earned) on six hits in 3.2 innings. After pitching a scoreless inning on Friday night, reliever Jimmy Yacabonis was hammered in just 1/3 of an inning in this game allowing seven earned runs on eight hits. The hosts were down to using position player Stevie Wilkerson to pitch the final 2.0 innings. Santander had four hits to lead the Orioles, falling a double short of the cycle. Mancini and Richie Martin each had two hits.
Boston will go for the series win on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. The Sox will send Andrew Cashner to the mound for his second start since being acquired, as he will be opposed by Asher Wojciechowski for the Orioles. Baltimore is now 30-67 on the season.
