Yankees win finale and finish sweep, Sox come limping home

August 5, 2019

The New York Yankees used a six run third inning to knock Boston starter David Price out of the game, and then held on to finish off a four game sweep of the Red Sox with a 7-4 win at Yankee Stadium on Sunday night.

Aaron Judge started things with a one out solo homer to right center in the bottom of the first inning. Much like game one of a doubleheader on Saturday in a 9-2 New York win, the big damage was done with two outs in the third inning. Judge was on with a one out walk, and then with two outs Gio Urshela lined a two run homer to left center to make it 3-0. Brett Gardner and Cameron Maybin then hit back to back doubles for another run, Mike Ford hit an RBI single, Kyle Higashioka doubled, and Mike Tauchman singled in Ford and Higashioka making the score 7-0. Gleybur Torres then walked to end the night for Price. Darwinzon Hernandez came on to pitch and got Judge to ground into a force out to end the inning.

Boston (59-55) got on the board in the fifth on back to back one out solo homers by Christian Vazquez and Michael Chavis. Andrew Benintendi provided the only other Sox offense with a two run sixth inning single. The visitors went pretty quietly in order in the seventh and eighth, and then got a two out walk to Brock Holt in the ninth before Yankee reliever Chad Green struck out Jackie Bradley Jr. swinging to end it. Boston has now lost eight games in a row, falling 6.5 games behind the second Wild Card team. New York is now 72-39 and have won five straight. The Red Sox are 1-8 in games on the road at Yankee Stadium this year and 4-11 against the Yanks this season with still four games remaining with the pinstripers in September at Fenway Park.

The starting rotation who struggled this series was no different Sunday night as Price (7-5) only went 2.2 innings allowing seven runs on nine hits, with two walks and three strikeouts. Hernandez and Ryan Weber did a great job out of the pen in relief to give Boston a chance for a comeback, combining for 5.1 innings of one hit shutout baseball. JD Martinez and Chavis led the offense with two hits a piece. Maybin and Higashioka had two hits a piece for New York. J.A. Happ (9-6) started and got the win allowing four runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings. Luis Cessa and Green fired 3.1 innings of hitless and scoreless relief, with Green picking up his second save.

Boston returns home as they host the Kansas City Royals on Monday night at 7:10 p.m. In game one of a three game series Rick Porcello takes the mound for the Sox to be opposed by Mike Montgomery for the Royals.
