The 2019 University of Maine football team has announced their captains for this upcoming season following the teams preseason scrimmage on Wednesday afternoon.
First year Head Coach Nick Charlton announced that senior wide receiver Jaquan Blair, senior defensive lineman Kayon Whitaker, junior quarterback Chris Ferguson, and junior linebacker Deshawn Stevens were voted on by other team members to be this years captains.
Charlton said, “The four guys that were selected are great young men, they’re really good players. I’m very happy that the team selected them. I’ve been through a lot with those guys, myself and some of the older staff members, so it’s really good to know that our guys respect them like that to vote them. That makes me feel like we understand where we’re going as a team.”
The defending CAA champion Black Bears open their season at home on Friday, August 30 at 6 p.m. when they welcome Sacred Heart to Alfond Stadium. Maine went 10-4 in 2018 winning the conference title, and then winning two playoff games against Jacksonville State at home and Weber State on the road, before having their season ended at Eastern Washington in the FCS semifinals on December 15. Maine is ranked #7 in the country in the STATS FCS preseason top 25 poll.
