On Wednesday night, Orono athletic director Mike Archer announced that the Red Riots would not be participating in varsity football during the 2019 season.
Official word from Orono AD Mike Archer is that their football team will play a JV schedule this season due to low numbers, all games will be played Mondays at 6 PM #mesports

Archer did also say player safety and keeping the LTC intact were the two biggest motives in going with 8 or 11-man football. Most LTC schools stayed with 11-man and that’s what Orono picked. #mesports
