The University of Maine women’s soccer team won their second straight game on Wednesday afternoon as goalkeeper Kira Kutzinski made it back to back shutouts as the Bears blanked St. Peter’s University at Jersey City, New Jersey 2-0.
Susannah Gaines headed in a corner kick by Emilie Andersen at the 20:25 mark of the first half to make it 1-0. Kutzinski faced two shots on goal in the opening half from the Peacocks. Maine (2-1) put it away at 54:17 of the second half when Kayla Brace found an open Hannah Bamford on a perfect lead pass. Bamford one touched the ball past St Peter’s goalkeeper Haley Martin and into the net.
The Black Bears outshot the Peacocks 5-2, as St Peter’s was held without a shot on goal in the second half. Maine had the corner kick advantage 6-5. SPU drops their first game of the season to fall to 2-1. Maine returns home Sunday to face Merrimack at Mahaney Diamond with a kickoff time of 5 p.m.
