GUILFORD– Peyton Grant scored two goals, including the game winner with 4:24 remaining in the second overtime to lift the Dexter Tigers girls soccer team to a 4-3 win over the Piscataquis Community High School (PCHS) Pirates on Friday afternoon.
A freshman duo connected for the first goal of the game for the Tigers when Jillean Poliquin set up classmate Jozlyn Paige with 17:39 remaining in the first half. Cloe Mountain gave Dexter a two goal lead with 15:40 remaining in the half. Dexter outshot PCHS 14-3 in the first half. Freshman keeper Lauren Robinson kept the Pirates close with seven saves in the first 40 minutes of play.
PCHS started the second half quick when freshman Abbey Ricker scored on an assist from Caroline Goggin 2:31 into the half. With just under 30 minutes remaining in the half, Goggin added a goal to even the score at two.
Dexter continued to put pressure on the Pirates defense. The Tigers had 16 corner kicks for the game and 28 total shots. Robinson finished with 15 saves. Grant and the Tigers took advantage of a golden opportunity with 18:22 remaining. Grant knocked a loose ball into the back of the net to give Dexter a 3-2 lead.
The Tigers would hold that lead until Goggin got her second assist with 2:46 remaining. This time she set up freshman Kendall Kimball as she finished the play to even the score and send the game into overtime. PCHS (0-1) will play at Greenville on Monday.
The teams played the first overtime without any solid scoring chances. Just 36 seconds into the second overtime, Grant would end the contest when she dribbled by two defenders and slammed the ball into the goal. Dexter (1-0) will play their home opener Monday against Foxcroft Academy.
