Moreland delivers for Boston, Sox top Yankees

September 7, 2019

Mitch Moreland hit a three run homerun in the fourth inning on Friday night on his birthday, and the Boston Red Sox used seven pitchers to hold the New York Yankees to three hits in a 6-1 win at Fenway Park.

In a scoreless game with two outs in the fourth inning Brock Holt would single in Rafael Devers with a hard grounder to right field. More two out damage was done when Moreland cranked his 15th homerun of the season to right. The three run homer ended up being the game winner and made it 4-0. Brett Garder hit a leadoff solo homer to right to start the fifth inning for New York (92-50). In the bottom half of the fifth Boston (76-65) Xander Bogaerts finished off the scoring on the night with a two run double to center.

Marcus Walden (9-2) got the win in the bullpen game for Boston. Jhoulys Chacin started on the mound and fired two perfect innings without allowing any runs or hits and striking out four. Moreland, who turned 34 Friday, led the way with three hits. Gardner had two of the three hits on the night for New York. Domingo German (17-4) took the loss on the hill allowing five runs on three hits with four walks in 4.1 innings.

Boston and New York continue their four game series with game two on Saturday evening at 4:05 p.m. The Red Sox will again go with a bullpen game as Travis Lakins is the first man up. The Yankees will counter with J.A. Happ.
