October 5th- Girls soccer- PVHS 2 Greenville 1
At Greenville, the Lakers hosted PVHS in their Homecoming and Breast Cancer Awareness game. A large crowd from both sides cheered as two of the top teams in class ‘D’ squared off on Saturday afternoon.
Greenville held the early attacking advantage, falling short on chances in the first half. Lexi Ireland gave PVHS the lead when she received a punt from her sister Emilee Ireland at midfield, beat two defenders before tucking the ball past the keeper. The score would stay 1-0 at the half. Greenville received a free kick midway through the second half, and Aleya Pelletier was able to get on the end of a Bianca Breton cross to tie the game 1-1. Both keepers came up with some key saves late in the game. Laker keeper Lexi Bjork made a jumping 1 handed save on a Lexi Ireland shot.
Emilee Ireland also made a great one handed save when Breton sent a powerful shot on frame. With 35 seconds left in the match, Lexi Ireland received a well played pass from Bri Carr and again beat both defenders and the keeper for the game winning goal. Howler netminder Emilee Ireland stopped 12 of 22 shots for the 9-0 Howlers who moved into 1st place in Class ‘D’ North. Lexi Bjork finished with 7 saves on 12 shots as Greenville drops to 6-3 on the season, and is currently 3rd in Class ‘D’ South. With the game winning goal, Lexi Ireland moves up to 14th all time for the State of Maine goal scoring record for girls.
