The New England Patriots outscored the Washington Redskins 21-0 in the second half Sunday afternoon breaking open a close game in picking up a 33-7 win at FedEx Field in Washington, DC.
Wide receiver Steven Sims put Washington (0-5) ahead early taking a handoff on a reverse from quarterback Colt McCoy and going 65 yards up the sideline in the first quarter to make it 7-0. Tom Brady connected with Julian Edelman for a six yard touchdown on the ensuing possession for the Patriots. New kicker Matt Nugent who was acquired Thursday for the injured Stephen Gostkowski missed the extra point. New England (5-0) eventually took a 12-7 halftime lead on field goals in the second quarter by Nugent of 37 and 23 yards.
New England drove the field to open the third quarter with Brady finding Brandon Bolden for a 29 yard touchdown. Sony Michel added a 14 yard scoring run later in the quarter, while Ryan Izzo caught a 10 yard score in the fourth to finish off the scoring.
Brady finished the day 28-42 passing, 348 yards, with three touchdowns and one interception. He passed Brett Favre for third all-time in passing yards, and is now less than 20 yards away from surpassing Peyton Manning for second place on the list. Michel rushed 16 times for 91 yards, while Edelman had eight receptions for 110 yards. Don’ta Hightower led the defense with eight total tackles, 1.5 sacks, and four tackles for loss. McCoy went 18-27 passing, 127 yards, with one interception in the loss. Sims led the rushing game with the one long touchdown carry. Terry McLaurin had three receptions for 51 yards. Cole Holcomb had 10 total tackles. The Patriots had five sacks and the Redskins had four on the day. New England has now allowed only two offensive touchdowns in their last six games.
New England returns home on a short week to host Daniel Jones and the New York Giants (2-3) at Gillette Stadium Thursday night at 8:20 p.m.
