Maine hockey picks up weekend sweep

October 12, 2019

Eduards Tralmaks got credit for his third goal of the weekend in overtime Saturday night as the University of Maine men’s ice hockey team completed a two game weekend sweep over Alaska-Anchorage with a 2-1 win at Alfond Arena in Orono.

The two teams skated to a scoreless tie through one period as Maine goalie Jeremy Swayman made 11 saves, and UAA goalie Kris Carlson kept the Bears out of the net with 10 stops. Samuel Rennaker though put Maine (2-1) on the board with his first goal as a Black Bear at 12:11 of the second. Rennaker took a loose puck and skated to the top of the left faceoff circle to the right of Carlson and snapped a wristshot that trickled through the goalie glove side. Tomi Hiekkavirta tied it though at 16:28 on the powerplay to even the score. Both Swayman and Carlson made several big grade A saves to keep the score tied through the third period and into overtime.

In the overtime Maine found a loose puck along the right wing boards that eventually would find the stick of Tralmaks out in the slot. Tralmaks let go a quick shot that went in off a Seawolves defensemans skate to end it 3:13 into the extra session.

Tim Doherty after a two goal and one assist effort in Fridays win, was the only multiple scorer Saturday with two more assists. Swayman made 37 saves as the Seawolves outshot the Black Bears 38-28. Carlson made 26 in the loss. UAA (0-2) was 1-8 on the powerplay, while Maine was 0-4.

Maine hits the road next Friday and Saturday night for 7 pm games in Hamden, Connecticut against the Quinnipiac Bobcats out of the ECAC. QU (2-0) won a pair of 3-2 games over American International College this weekend. Both contests can be seen on ESPN Plus.
