The Class B North regional soccer finals were played at Hamdpen Academy on Wednesday.
In the first game, the Caribou Vikings got a goal from Ethan Holdsworth with 27:45 remaining in the first half and played a dominating second half in defeating MDI 1-0 in the boys final. Caribou outshot MDI 19-5, including 10-1 in the second half. Cory Herbert made three saves in goal for the Vikings. Nathanael Philbrook recorded 10 saves for the Trojans. MDI finishes the season with a record of 12-3-2. It is the first regional championship for Caribou boys soccer. Caribou (15-0-2) will take on Yarmouth in the class B state title game on Saturday morning at 10 AM at Falmouth high school.
In the girls game, Sydney Gallop drilled the game winning goal into the back 6:17 into overtime to give the Hermon Hawks a 2-1 win over Waterville. Freshman Lyndsee Reed set up the Gallop goal with a beautiful pass.
Waterville took the early lead when Paige St. Pierre set up Sadie Garling on a corner kick with 27:54 remaining in the first half. Hermon outshot the Purple Panthers 22-7, but couldn’t convert until freshman Allison Cameron put a direct kick from 25 yards away into the upper corner of the goal with 27:36 remaining in the second half.
The game remained even through regulation thanks to strong goalie play from both goalkeepers. Purple Panthers keeper Jacie Richard recorded 12 saves. Hawks made four saves, including one where she leaped and knocked the hall away in the final minutes of regulation. Gallup finished the game and sent the Hawks to the regional title with 8:43 left in the first overtime. Hermon will face Cape Elizabeth in the state final at 12:30 PM at Falmouth high school on Saturday.
