AUGUSTA, Maine- The Southern Maine Community College men’s and women’s basketball teams were in Augusta on Tuesday night for a Yankee Small College Conference basketball doubleheader with the University of Maine-Augusta. The Seawolves women were looking to stay unbeaten overall and in the YSCC, while the men’s team was also looking to stay unblemished in conference play.
In the women’s game- The SMCC Seawolves got 29 points from Amanda Brett and 25 from Aija Andrews and outscored the UMA Moose 51-35 in the second half to pull away for a 69-55 YSCC win at the Augusta Civic Center.
UMA (4-2, 4-2 YSCC) scored the first four points of the game for an early lead before Brett put SMCC up for the first time at 8-6 with a jump shot with 4:50 left in the first quarter. The Seawolves led 12-9 after the opening 10 minutes. The Moose had three leads of four points each in the second quarter and held a 20-18 lead at halftime.
Another Brett jump shot almost three minutes into the third quarter put SMCC up for good at 27-26. The Seawolves would score 20 of the next 30 points after the Brett shot to open up their biggest lead to that point 47-36. UMA would only get as close as seven early in the fourth quarter as SMCC went up as many as 16 to stay unbeaten.
Brett added 10 rebounds and five assists to her game high in points, while Andrews added nine rebounds. SMCC is now 8-0, 4-0 YSCC. UMA was led by Madeline Suhr who had 23 points, 10 rebounds, two steals, and two blocks. Kaeti Butterfield added 10 points and five rebounds. SMCC next plays at Unity on Thursday night at 6 p.m., while UMA hosts Paul Smiths College on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Central Maine Community College.
In the men’s game- The visiting SMCC Seawolves put four players in double figures and pulled away from the UMA Moose 75-57 to stay unbeaten in YSCC play.
UMA (2-5, 2-4 YSCC) took an early 18-10 lead on nine points in the first six and a half minutes by Israel Brown. The Seawolves though took over the lead again on a three-pointer from Pedro Fonseca 25-22. SMCC ended the final 13:30 of the half on a 25-8 run for a 35-26 halftime advantage.
Connor Davies slammed home a missed layup by Elijah Smith for the Moose 2:27 into the second half to get the hosts as close as they’d be able to get the rest of the way at 38-32. SMCC (7-1, 4-0 YSCC) would end up opening the lead to as many as 21 in staying unbeaten so far in league play.
Ian Regan led the way for SMCC with 13 points and four rebounds. Anthony Lobor had 11 points, nine rebounds, and three assists. Clay Hardy had 10 points, five rebounds, and three assists while Fonseca added 10 points off the bench. Brown finished with a game high 21 points, three rebounds, and three steals for UMA. Davies had 18 points and 16 rebounds, while Smith also registered a double double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. SMCC also travels to Unity to play the Rams on Thursday night following the women’s contest, while UMA plays Paul Smiths College following the women’s contest Saturday afternoon at CMCC.
