November 29, 2019

Ben Poisson scored a go ahead 4 on 4 goal in the third period on Friday night, and Adam Dawe added the eventual game winning powerplay goal as the Maine Black Bears pulled away from the St. Lawrence Saints for a 5-2 non-conference men’s ice hockey win in a game played on the campus of Suny-Canton in Canton, New York.

The teams battled through a scoreless tie for a good part of the first 40 minutes. St. Lawrence (3-11-1) had the first great opportunity when Maines Eduards Tralmalks got called for a five minute major with 5:34 left in the second period. The Black Bears turned that the other way when Ryan Smith cut it down the right wing and buried his first goal of the season shorthanded at 16:32 to make it 1-0 Maine. The Saints tied it though at 18:23 on that same powerplay when Zach Risteau deflected in a shot from the point to tie it at 1-1.

Maine (8-5-2) took over the third period starting with the Poisson goal on a laser from the point at 6:22. On the ensuing powerplay Adam Dawe buried a feed from Tralmaks at 7:41 to increase the lead to a pair at 3-1 that turned out to be the difference. The Bears continued to pour it on when Tralmaks tipped in a point shot at 9:41 on the powerplay as well. The Saints got a late powerplay goal from Bo Hanson at 17:51, before Smith got his second of the night for Maine into an empty net at 19:39 to finish off the scoring.

Jeremy Swayman made 28 saves in the Maine win. Emil Zetterquist made 29 in the loss for St. Lawrence. The Black Bears went 2-6 on the powerplay, while the Saints were 2-4 with both goals coming with an extra man. Along with Smith, Tralmaks also had two points on the night for Maine with a goal and an assist. Risteau had a goal and an assist for St. Lawrence. The teams finish off the two game non-conference series on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
