The Maine Black Bears were shutout for the first 55:03 Saturday night before Tim Doherty scored a powerplay goal with 4:57 left and the visitors ended up coming out with a 1-1 tie with the St. Lawrence Saints at SUNY-Canton in Canton, New York.
St. Lawrence (3-11-2) held Maine down through the first period and a half only allowing the Bears 10 shots on goal and having staked themselves to a 1-0 lead on a first period goal from Jacob Nielsen. Maine eventually broke through though and ended up winning the shots battle by putting 19 on Saints goalie Francis Boisvert in the third period. Doherty found a bouncing puck 26 seconds into a powerplay and poked it into the net that ended up sending the game to an extra five minute period. Both teams had a chance each in overtime with Andrew McIntyre hitting one off the post behind Maine goalie Jeremy Swayman, and the Bears having a chance in the closing seconds near the net but noone could find the game winner.
Swayman made 21 saves in the Maine net, as the Black Bears record goes to 8-5-3. Mitch Fossier and Adam Dawe had the assists on the Doherty equalizer. Boisvert made 36 saves for St. Lawrence, who are now winless in six straight games. Maine was 1-4 on the powerplay, while SLU went 0-6. The Black Bears are at #10 UMass for a pair of Hockey East games next Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m.
