Maine men’s basketball falls short at Northeastern

December 4, 2019

Senior guard Jordan Roland had a game high 28 points on Wednesday night as the Northeastern Huskies scored 21 of the games final 32 points to pull away from the Maine Black Bears in men’s non-conference basketball 78-63 at Matthews Arena in Boston.

Maine (2-6) had two early leads on the games first basket by Mykhailo Yagodin and a layup by Vilgot Larsson, but Northeastern got a three-pointer from Roland 4:19 in and then never trailed in improving to 5-4. The Huskies increased the lead to nine, but the Black Bears would cut into that and make it a four point game at the break 36-32. Maine would get within three early in the second half on a jumper in the paint by Andrew Fleming, but NU would push it back to 10 twice on a layup by Tyson Walker and another three-pointer from Roland. Fleming again helped the Bears back into the game, hitting a layup to cut it to 57-52 with 8:26 left. An 8-0 Northeastern run led by a three-pointer by Bolden Brace, a three point play from Walker, and two free throws from Roland increased the lead to 13 and Maine never got closer than 11 the rest of the way as the Huskies went up as many as 18 late. Roland also reached 1,000 points for his career with Northeastern with a pair of free throws with just over two minutes left.

Fleming led the Bears with 23 points and six rebounds on 9-13 shooting. Peter Stumer added 12 points and four rebounds. Roland added four rebounds to his game high point total for the Huskies. He shot 8-16 (5-10 three-pointers), and also went 7-7 from the foul line. Walker added 15 points, while Brace had 11.

Maine will be at Central Connecticut State on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
