In Howland, Alex Tash scored a team-high 13 points, and Zach Doore netted a career high 11 points, including four big free-throws in the fourth quarter, to cap off a come-from-behind 42-38 win over Mattanawcook in the season opener.
The Lynx took an early lead that they didn’t relinquish until the last frame, as they led 19-16 at the half. Brandon Oliver carried the load offensively, scoring 8 of his game-high 18 points in the 2nd quarter.
The Howlers found themselves down by as many as nine in the 3rd quarter after a corner three by Oliver. Doore responded with a triple on the other end, followed by one from Tash the next possession to claw within three again. Those were the only two 3-point field goals of the game for the Howlers.
With under three minutes to go in regulation, Zach Mitchell put PVHS on top for the first time since early in the game, by finishing a Doore pass in the post. After a Jackson Weatherbee free-throw tied the game, Shane Borrello converted a beautiful drive and dish from Tash to take a lead they wouldn’t give up. Timely free-throws by the Howlers sealed the game.
Other notable scorers included PV’s Borrello with 6, and MA’s Cody Hanscom with 7.
Penobscot Valley will visit 1-0 Stearns on Tuesday, while the Lynx travel to East Corinth to play Central that same day.
