Strong second half sends Dexter to girls basketball victory over PCHS

GUILFORD– The Dexter Tigers outscored PCHS 21-5 in the final 14 minutes and rolled to a 42-27 win over the Pirates on Saturday afternoon.

The teams had five lead changes in the first quarter with the first eight minutes ending with the score even at 10.

The Tigers started the second quarter on a 7-2 run. Katelynn White and Hailee Hartford each came off the bench to score three second quarter points to help the Pirates be within three (21-18) at intermission.

Mackenzie Kain and Elizabeth Kendall each put in two points early in the second half as the Pirates jumped ahead 22-21. Things changed after that as the Tigers turned up the defense. Dexter forced 21 PCHS turnovers. The Tigers had five different scorers in the third quarter.

The Tigers only allowed nine points in the second half, including two in the fourth quarter.

Peyton Grant scored a game high 20 points for the Tigers. Grant recorded four steals and shot 8-9 from the free throw line. Cloe Mountain and Elizabeth Kinney each scored six points. Abi Wakefield added four points and 10 rebounds. Cheyenne Beem recorded three points, eight rebounds, and four steals. Jozlynn Paige came off the bench to put in three points. Dexter (2-0) will host Stearns on Monday night.

Kendall led the Pirates with 10 points and seven rebounds. Hartford and Martina Hill scored five points each. White added three points, while Kain and Meagan Lemieux chipped in with two points each. PCHS (1-3) will next play on Friday when they host Searsport.

Dexter out rebounded PCHS 30-23. The Tigers shot 16-23 from the free throw line, while the Pirates shot 6-9.
