At the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, Zach Doore’s sizzling start helped propel Penobscot Valley past Lee Academy 55-33 at the Maine Basketball Hall of Fame Classic.
Points were hard to come by in the first quarter, as both teams seemed to struggle adjusting to the arena. Doore scored 8 of his game high 15 points in the first, while all other Lee and Penobscot Valley players combined for only six points in the frame, and the Howlers built an 11-4 lead.
Doore added five more in the second quarter, as PVHS stretched their lead to 27-14 at the half. Zach Mitchell and Shane Borrello provided some punch in the paint, notching four points each. Anthony Peters and Willie Hsu also scored four points each in the 2nd.
Balanced scoring for the Howlers in the 3rd extended their lead to 18. Hsu did his part to keep Lee in it by tallying six points. Six Howlers scored in the fourth frame to help close out the win.
Penobscot Valley’s scorers were Doore (15), Reece Carter 10 (including 3-three’s), Mitchell (6), Borrello (6), Bryce Seeley (6), Lance Neal (4), Alex Tash (4), Gabe Reed (3), and William Brown (1). The Howlers improve to 5-2 and host undefeated Dexter on Monday.
